It may not have happened the way he wanted, but Felix Auger-Aliassime is into the quarterfinals in Monte Carlo for the first time in his career after advancing past Casper Ruud by retirement, 7-5, 2-2, when the Norwegian was forced to stop due to a leg injury.

But with that, the 25-year-old Canadian unlocks a new achievement—he’s now reached the quarterfinals or better at all nine Masters 1000 events at least once in his career.

He had already gone this far at Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome, Canada, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris, and now he completes his set in Monte Carlo, which was the only one he was missing.

And there’s more.

Auger-Aliassime, who was born in 2000, is just the third player born in the 2000s to reach the quarterfinals or better at all nine Masters 1000 events in their career, after exactly who you would expect—world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and world No. 2 Jannik Sinner.

Alcaraz, who was born in 2003, completed his career set at Rome last year, where he eventually went all the way to the title.

Sinner, who was born in 2001, completed his career set later last year in Paris, where he too eventually went all the way to the title.

Auger-Aliassime is also the first Canadian player to complete the career set of quarterfinals at all nine Masters 1000 events. Milos Raonic, who’s now retired, came close, only missing Shanghai. Denis Shapovalov is the next-closest, currently missing only Indian Wells, Monte Carlo, Cincinnati and Shanghai in his collection.

Keeping his career-best run in Monte Carlo won’t get any easier for Auger-Aliassime, as up next will be Sinner, who outdid Tomas Machac in his third-round match on Thursday, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-3.

Not only has Sinner beaten Auger-Aliassime the last four times in a row that they’ve played, dropping only one set, but he’s also on an incredible 19-match winning streak at Masters 1000 events, dropping only one set—that’s 38 of his last 39 sets at this level.
