MADRID(AP) Mardy Fish of the United States lost to Tommy Robredo 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 Tuesday in the second round of the Madrid Open.

Fernando Verdasco advanced with 6-3, 6-2 win over Juan Carlos Ferrer in an all-Spanish match on clay at the ``Magic Box'' tennis center.

After dropping the opening set, Robredo broke in three of four chances in the last two sets and improved to 9-0 in tiebreakers this season.

He will play either No. 3 Andy Murray or Simone Bolelli, who play later Tuesday at the joint ATP and WTA event. Roger Federer was to play later against Sweden's Robin Soderling.

In first-round play, 10th-seeded Nikolay Davydenko defeated Viktor Troicki 6-2, 6-2. Marin Cilic held off Marcel Granollers 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-1.

On the women's side, ninth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki defeated Varvara Lepchenko of the United States 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the third round. The Dane will play either Venus Williams or Alisa Kleybanova.
