Mardy Fish’s coach, David Nainkin, tells the New York Times that his player was concerned earlier this year that he’d never achieve his goals. The 29-year-old Fish has qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals for the first time.

"It was tough, we couldn’t understand it," said Nainkin. "I remember in March, he said: ‘I’m never going to be in the Top 10. My time is running out.'"

Fish admitted that he is a bit nervous about how he will do in London. His close friend Andy Roddick, who did not make the season-ending championships this year but has been a frequent participant, told him to take it easy on himself.

"Andy kept telling me just to relax and not look at the standings and just play," Fish said. "He kept telling me, ‘You’re fine, you’re fine.’ And I said: ‘Dude. You played it eight times, shut up, you can easily say that."
