Former world No. 5 Anna Chakvetadze tells Russia’s Sport Express that she has officially retired. The 26-year-old Moscow native reached the U.S. Open semifinals in 2007, but never reached that stage of a major again.

In December 2007, Chakvetadze and her family were victims of an armed robbery, which she says emotionally scarred her. The robbers, who assaulted her father and stole money from her family home, were never caught. Chakvetadze has not played a competitive match since September 2012, when she qualified for Tashkent and reached the round of 16.

Chakvetadze won four of her eight WTA singles titles in 2007—the year she reached the quarterfinals of both the Australian Open and Roland Garros, losing to Maria Sharapova on both occasions.

"I no longer see myself in professional tennis so I am ready to say that may career is over," said Chakvetadze. "Of course, this was a difficult decision and I thought hard about it but now it is finally taken. I understood that the point of return to tennis was behind me. I have a chronic back injury. So I took the decision to stop and start a new life."
