Vera Zvonareva, who retired in her second qualifying match in New Haven, won her opening qualifying match at the U.S. Open on Tuesday.

She defeated 17th seed and world No. 125 Han Xinyun, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

The former world No. 2 was given a wild card into New Haven qualifying, and she won her first-round match against Anastasia Rodionova this past Saturday. Later in the day, she retired in the second round against No. 1 seed Magdaléna Rybáriková.

Zvonareva, 32, said two matches in a day were "a little bit too much" for her at this point in her comeback, but that didn't stop her from competing in Flushing Meadows this week.

The Russian got married and had a child in her two years away from tour.

She joins two more WTA players returning to tennis with a child in tow, Patty Schnyder and Kateryna Bondarenko. Bondarenko defeated Sílvia Soler Espinosa in her qualifying match on Tuesday, and Schnyder will open against Ysaline Bonaventure on Wednesday.

Zvonareva is No. 742 in the rankings.
