WATCH: Tennis Channel Live discusses Tiafoe's strong finish to the 2021 season.

American star Frances Tiafoe announced he would be taking time off to heal a persistent elbow injury—with no immediate return date in sight.

“Not the most ideal start of the year but imma be back soon enough,” Tiafoe wrote on Instagram. “See y’all soon.”

A former Australian Open quarterfinalist, Tiafoe enjoyed a remarkable 2021 season that saw him score four Top 10 wins—including major upsets over Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev at Wimbledon and the US Open, respectively—and reach his first ATP 500 final in Vienna. Though ranked as high as No. 29 in 2019, his year-end ranking of No. 38 was only the second time in his career that the 24-year-old finished a season ranked inside the Top 40.

He began 2022 taking back-to-back losses against the likes of Thanasi Kokkinakis and Tommy Paul before bowing out in the second round of the Australian Open to countryman Taylor Fritz.

Against Fritz, Tiafoe averaged a first serve speed of 115 mph and managed just six aces, compared to Fritz’s 21.

Tiafoe’s announcement likely rules him out of hard-court tournaments in Indian Wells or Miami, but no definitive withdrawals have occurred.
