Tennis' biggest stars didn't just let their racquets do the talking in 2025. To look back on a memorable season, we're counting down some of the biggest winners in the press conference room and on the microphone—and Frances Tiafoe takes the top spot in our countdown for the stinging one-liner he delivered that cut through that cloud of controversy that marred his quarterfinal loss at Roland Garros.

2025 proved to be a challenging year for the fan-favorite American, but an up-and-down season was decidedly on the upswing when he put together his deepest-ever run at Roland Garros in June. Previously dubbing clay-court seasons of prior years "an eye-roll situation," Tiafoe teamed with Tommy Paul to make recent history for the U.S. in Paris, as two American men were among the eight quarterfinalists for the first time since 1996.

But the good feelings quickly evaporated for both in that round: A physically-hampered Paul won just five games against eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, while Tiafoe was bundled out in four sets by Lorenzo Musetti—but only after the Italian was spared a sticky exit himself.

Musetti knocks out Tiafoe in four sets to reach first RG semifinals

While the 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 for Musetti looked otherwise routine, the Italian was left biting his nails when, after losing a point to trail 5-3 in the second set, he kicked a ball towards the back fence and it rebounded against the shoulder of a line umpire standing there.

The official was unfazed, and Musetti received a code violation warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Tiafoe didn't blame the incident, which came in the set he won, for his defeat. But he did slam a perceived double standard in decision-making for players' bad behavior. The moment came two years after doubles player Miyu Kato was defaulted from a Roland Garros match after hitting a ball girl, a decision that caused controversy given the apparently accidental nature of the hit.

Obviously he did that and nothing happened. I think that's comical, but it is what it is. Nothing happened, so there's nothing really to talk about. Obviously it's not consistent, so it is what it is. Frances Tiafoe

Musetti, for his part, called the incident a "really unlucky coincidence."

"I was a little bit, honestly, scared, because I really didn't want to harm nobody, of course," he said. "So, I immediately went to the line umpire, and I of course said, Sorry, I apologize to everyone.”

The two players' seasons continued to diverge from there. Though his Roland Garros run was stopped in the final four by Carlos Alcaraz, Musetti went on to have the best year of his career, culminating with a Top 10 finish and a first-ever berth at the year-end ATP Finals in Turin.

Tiafoe, meanwhile, finished the season outside the Top 20 for the first time since 2021, and shook up his coaching team ahead of 2026 by splitting with coach David Witt and hitting partner Jordi Arconada in October.
