Fritz, Shelton, Tiafoe, Paul commit to play Davis Cup Second Round Qualifier in Delray Beach

The last time the U.S. won the Davis Cup was 2007. Could this be the year that drought ends?

The current generation on tour is ready to do its part. On Thursday, it was revealed the four-highest ranked Americans have committed to play September’s Davis Cup Qualifying Second Round tie.

World No. 4 Taylor Fritz, No. 6 Ben Shelton, No. 14 Frances Tiafoe and No. 16 Tommy Paul are set to follow up their US Open bids by banding together in Delray Beach, Fla. At stake against Czechia, a trip to November’s Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna, Italy where the final knockout portion of the competition will commence.

Bryan, in his third year at the helm, will have his options among the singles and doubles combinations—and the ability to add a fifth roster member if so desired. The Czechs are fully capable of delivering on hard courts with Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik, Tomas Machac and Jiri Lehecka leading their charge.

Tennis Channel will air live coverage of the two-day tie. The first of back-to-back singles matches kicks off action beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 12, with a doubles rubber and two more singles matches—if necessary—to follow Saturday, September 13. The first country to reach three points advances.

Fritz and Paul are the most experienced of the U.S. quartet, having each suited up for 10 ties. Tiafoe was the first to debut back in 2018, while Shelton is due to make his second appearance. After punching a ticket to 2024's Final 8, the U.S. was eliminated by Australia in a deciding doubles rubber.

Italy earned an automatic spot to the Davis Cup Final 8 after successfully defending its crown last year in Malaga, Spain.
