A foot problem will keep Gael Monfils from playing the French Open, with the Frenchman joining Matteo Berrettini in withdrawing from the event.

The 35-year-old announced on social media that he would not compete in this week's ATP event in Lyon, or Roland Garros next week, because of a foot spur that has bothered him since Monte Carlo.

"I have decided to undergo a small procedure this week to treat the issue before returning to competitive play," said Monfils.

The former semifinalist is a favorite of the Parisian crowds.

Gael Monfils last competed in Madrid, taking a straight-sets loss to Novak Djokovic.

Berrettini, who has been off the tour because of a recent hand surgery, said a few days ago he is now recovered from his injury. But the 26-year-old Italian added that he had decided against returning to play best-of-five contests on clay so soon. The No. 10 was a finalist at Wimbledon last summer.

"Following a very positive update from my medical team, I am now back on-court training at a high level," said Berrettini. "My hand is feeling great and I am working hard to build up my match fitness. I will delay my comeback to compete in the full grass season."
