BARCELONA, Spain (AP) Ninth-seeded Richard Gasquet of France rallied past Juan Ignacio Chela 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Barcelona Open.

Gasquet overcame an inconsistent serve to win the back-and-forth match after breaking his Argentine opponent three times in the deciding set.

Earlier, fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych withdrew from the clay court event because of a stomach virus.

Former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero beat Xavier Malisse of Belgium 6-4, 6-2 in his first match since the U.S. Open. The Spanish player had been recovering from wrist and knee surgeries performed in October.

Other first-round winners included Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Ivan Dodig, Simon Greul and Kei Nishikori of Japan.
