Racquet

Babolat Pure Aero 98 ($299/single; $579/pair)

Fernandez recently switched from the Pure Aero to the Aero 98. The smaller head size, thinner beam and tighter string pattern ups the control, while still retaining much of the frame’s trademark spin potential. It still produces a lively ball, but allows Fernandez to hit into tighter windows and take fuller advantage of her all-court skills.

Compared to its predecessor—called the Aero VS—the string spacing in the upper portion of the hoop has been tightened for even better command. Another notable change is the SMAC vibration dampening has been removed and replaced by NF2 Tech at 3 and 9 o’clock. It performs a similar function, but is made from flax fibers—commonly used in alpine skis—which is a more natural product designed to give enhanced feedback and better feel at contact. A nice feature for competitive players needing multiple racquets is the Aero 98 is offered as a single or in matching pairs. The two matched racquets are intended to have a maximum weight variance of just 1 gram, well below industry standard.

Apparel

Lululemon Textured Mesh Tank Top ($68) and High-Rise Skirt ($88)

When the hugely popular Canadian athleisure brand decided to branch into tennis, working with Fernandez was a natural fit. The diamond-patterned mesh on this tank is made with moisture-wicking, quick-drying fabric that stretches to conform to any movement. It has a snug fit with a built-in shelf bra that provides a medium level of support. The cropped length is cut just above the waist for a trendy look.

The top pairs perfectly with the high-rise skirt for a flattering outfit. Made of the same performance material to handle the toughest matches, it has a mid-thigh length to provide the perfect amount of coverage and freedom. A built-in short liner has side drop-in pockets to stash balls or valuables. Silicone grippers on the hem prevent the skirt from riding up during play.

Shoe

K-Swiss Hypercourt Express 2 ($120)

Fernandez has been on something of a footwear journey. In recent years she has worn On, Puma and even prototype shoes of a brand designed by her father. For the time-being she has been playing in different K-Swiss models.

The Hypercourt Express is the brand’s lightweight, speed shoe. The second edition is even lighter and nimbler than the original, promoting fast footwork and quick court coverage. Also new is the Durawrap Flex on the upper which bolsters support and durability while remaining pliable. The Surgelite cushioning in the midsole soaks up shock underfoot with a midfoot shank preventing twisting when executing sharp cuts. The outsole has a non-marking modified herringbone tread pattern that offers dependable traction on any surface. A generous cut and molded Ortholite sock liner give the shoe step-in comfort with no break-in period.
