STUTTGART, Germany (AP)—Top seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia was ousted from the Mercedes Cup in the second round by Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain 7-6 (7), 2-6, 6-1 on Thursday.
Gimeno-Traver hit a dozen aces and seven double faults in beating Davydenko, against whom he won only four games last year in Croatia.
Fourth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero finished off Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 6-7 (1), 7-6 (3), 6-2 in a match which was postponed the night before because of darkness at the start of the second-set tiebreaker. Ferrero will take on Gilles Simon of France in the final eight.
No. 3-seeded Gael Monfils denied Spanish qualifier Pablo Andujar his first ATP quarterfinals by 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, and will next face local hope Florian Mayer of Germany, who beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-3, 6-1.
Switzerland’s Marco Chiudinelli beat Germany’s Bjorn Phau 7-6 (3), 6-3 to reach his first quarterfinals of the season.
