HAMBURG(AP) German wild card Simon Greul rallied to beat Janko Tipsarevic 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 Monday in the first round of the German Open.
Fernando Verdasco, Tomas Berdych and Gael Monfils all pulled out of the clay-court tournament because of injuries.
The top-seeded player is Gilles Simon, followed by Nikolay Davydenko and French Open runner-up Robin Soderling. All of the 16 seeded players received first-round byes.
Among those advancing to the second round were Ivan Navarro, Pablo Cuevas, Potito Starace, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Jan Hernych.
