The 2016 U.S. Open women’s draw is completed, and you don’t have to look very far down the bracket to find this tennis feast’s tastiest amuse bouche: Serena Williams vs. Ekaterina Makarova. The 36th-ranked Russian is one of the most threatening unseeded players in the tournament, and she tends to play her best at the biggest tournaments. She’s beaten Serena before—at a Slam; the 2012 Aussie Open—though Williams hasn’t had problems against her since. The American leads their head-to-head 4-1, but for Williams, who doesn’t appear to enter the Open at 100 percent, she’d surely prefer a less challenging adversary across the net to kick things off.

—Agnieszka Radwanska may be the best player never to have won a major, and it seems that the tennis gods have taken pity on her. She’s in what is easily the weakest quarter of the draw.

—The third quarter is in sharp contrast to the second in terms of depth. Neither Madison Keys nor Garbine Muguruza will have a simple time getting to the quarterfinal round, not with the lethal CoCo Vandeweghe, seasoned Caroline Wozniacki and Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig nearby. To say nothing of former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and rising Johanna Konta, of course.

—The top “early round” match on the women’s side could pit Petra Kvitova against Angelique Kerber in the fourth round. The German could wrestle the top ranking from Serena—who could meet Simona Halep in the quarters—if she advances far enough.
