Iga Swiatek becomes only woman to win 50 or more matches in each of the last four years

Iga Swiatek has made a blistering start to her 2025 US Open campaign, beating Emiliana Arango in straight sets on Tuesday, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of the last major of the year.

The world No. 2's victory against the Colombian was a special one, too—it was her milestone 50th win of the year.

And there's more.

She's now won 50 or more matches in each of the last four years, the only woman to achieve that feat, and no other woman can join her in that stat, as she was the only one to hit that number in 2022.

She recorded 67 wins in 2022, 68 in 2023 and 64 in 2024.

Only one man has won 50 or more matches in each of the last four years—that would be the other world No. 2, Carlos Alcaraz, who had 57 wins in 2022, 65 in 2023, 54 in 2024 and 55 so far in 2025.

Swiatek was in control from start to finish in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday, not facing a single break point in eight service games—she was never even pushed to deuce in any of them, actually—and breaking Arango in four of her seven service games.

The 2022 US Open champion finished the encounter with almost twice as many winners as unforced errors, 26 to 14, wrapping up the 60-minute victory with one last forehand winner.

"Well, first matches are always a bit different," Swiatek told reporters afterwards. "I'm happy that I had some time to just get used to the conditions and the surface, because for sure it's different than the practice courts. I think it was just a solid match, and so I'm happy that I can play another round here."

With the victory, the six-time Grand Slam champion is now 26-1 in her career in first-round matches at the majors, the only loss coming to Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic at Wimbledon in 2019.

Up next for the No. 2 seed in the second round will be Dutchwoman Suzan Lamens, who defeated American wild card Valerie Glozman in her first-round match over on Court 11, 6-4, 6-2.

Swiatek and Lamens will be playing each other for the first time.
