In a twist-ladden match, top-seeded Naomi Osaka recovered from the brink of defeat to secure a quarterfinal win over Donna Vekic, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4), at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

Down 5-1 in the third set, Osaka started to show signs of life as she denied No. 25-ranked Vekic the chance to serve for the match. The two-time Grand Slam champion reeled off four straight games, and eventually squeezed out the victory.

Earlier on Friday, No. 3-seeded Petra Kvitova scored a victory over No. 8-seeded Anastasija Sevastova, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

21-year-old Osaka next faces No. 8-seeded Anett Kontaveit or Victoria Azarenka, who upset defending champion Karolina Pliskova on Thursday.
