No. 3 Victoria Azarenka suffers a right knee injury in the second set of her 6-1, 6-2 victory over Maria Joao Koehler in the first round of Wimbledon and describes the pain as blinding.
Azarenka wept on court for about two minutes after the injury occurred and said that the constant pain “freaked me out." She added that she felt afraid but once she had her knee wrapped by the trainer and doctor she began to settle down. Azarenka plans to undergo an MRI tonight.
“It felt really painful,” she said. “One moment it was getting better. Then it was inconsistency. I’m proud of the way I kind of programmed my mind and really was taking it one at a time because it's never easy. At one point I couldn't see the ball. All I could think about is what happened. So that shock took a little bit of while for me to get over. But I'm glad I could, you know, to find that calmness in that critical moment.”
