Sania Mirza undergoes surgery on her left knee in India on Saturday. Mirza first injured her knee while slipping in her first-round match against Virginie Razzano at Wimbledon, then tore her meniscus at the U.S. Open. Mirza, who had near career-ending wrist surgery in 2008, was hoping to qualify for the WTA Championships in doubles with Elena Vesnina, but has been unable to get back on court. Her father Imran told IANS that she might be able to start practicing in four weeks.

In other injury news, a source told TENNIS.com that former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic will not begin practicing again until the end of next week after re-injuring her back in Beijing. Ivanovic was forced to retire there against Agnieszka Radwanska. She’s scheduled to play the tournament in Luxembourg the week after next.

After twisting her ankle in Tokyo, No. 2 Maria Sharapova began practicing in L.A. on Thursday and now appears probable to play the WTA Championships in Istanbul. She has been training with her father, Yuri, who no longer coaches her on the road but does train with her at home.
