Rafael Nadal wants to tidy up his game going into the third round of the US Open.

The world No. 1 was pushed to four sets by Japan's Taro Daniel on Thursday night, and was unhappy with his game during his opener.

"First two matches have been, of course, not great, but I'm in the third round," he said.

But Nadal pointed to the stats.

"I hit 40 winners," the 15-time Grand Slam champion said. "That's not [a] bad number. But I hit 35 unforced errors. That's a bad number for me. I need to fix that, I need to improve that."

The Spaniard explained that his aim is to hit the ball with "high intensity," but also with confidence that it will stay in the court.

"That's the way I need to play if I want to have chances of success," he said.

Nadal plays Leonardo Mayer in the next round.
