Janko Tipsarevic, a former world No. 8 and two-time US Open quarterfinalist, has announced that he will retire at the end of the season. The 35-year-old Serbian made the announcement on Tuesday via social media.
“It has been a great 16 years,” said Tipsarevic. “After a lot of soul searching and thinking what is important to me in this stage of my life and what does make me happy, I have decided to retire from professional tennis.”
He plans to retire after the Davis Cup Madrid finals in November, in which Serbia will compete.
“I’m not gonna write a heart breaking speech (yet) where you will all cry since I have still some tennis left in me,” he wrote. “Since I have still some tennis left in me. Apart from US Open next week and several ATP tournaments, my last competition will the Davis Cup in Madrid.”
Earlier this year, Tipsarevic made a winning return to the tour after being sidelined for much of the past two seasons with a hamstring injury, reaching the Houston quarterfinals.
Tipsarevic has won four titles in his career, and in addition to his US Open success, he made the fourth round at each of the other three majors.
