WIMBLEDON, England(AP) Fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic retired from her fourth-round match against Vera Zvonareva at Wimbledon on Monday due to a back injury.
The Serb had treatment when trailing Zvonareva 6-1, 3-0 and retired three points later. It is the fourth time Jankovic has bowed out in the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Jankovic, who was attempting to reach her first quarterfinals at the All England Club, struggled with her service game from the start and was broken by her Russian opponent five times, failing to hold once.
After slipping to 4-0 down in the first set, the 25-year-old Jankovic briefly found her form to break back in game five.
But that was as good as it got as Zvonareva wrapped up the set in just 24 minutes.
The second set began in much the same fashion, with Jankovic unable to stay in rallies for more than a few shots.
Jankovic, who double-faulted six times as well as making 13 unforced errors, asked to receive treatment while serving in the third game, but was made to wait until the conclusion of the game before throwing in the towel without hitting another ball.
Zvonareva, who had been 0-2 previously in Wimbledon fourth-round matches, will face the winner of the all-Belgian clash between Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin.
The 25-year-old Zvonareva's best grand slam performance came in 2009, when she reached the semifinals of the Australian Open.
