MELBOURNE, Australia(AP) Top-seeded Jelena Jankovic has advanced to the third round of the Australian Open with a tougher-than-expected win over Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium.

Jankovic, bidding for her first Grand Slam singles title, beat Flipkens 6-4, 7-5 on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Serbian player lost last year's U.S. Open title to Serena Williams and also made the semifinals in last year's Australian Open and French Open and the fourth round at Wimbledon.

She'll play 26th-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan, who beat Nathalie Dechy of France 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round.
