Jannik Sinner kicks off milestone 50th consecutive week at No. 1 on ATP rankings

After reaching the final in his first tournament back in Rome, Jannik Sinner hits a big milestone on the new ATP rankings today, kicking off his 50th consecutive week at No. 1.

And he joins some elite company as just the fifth player in ATP rankings history to amass 50 weeks in their very first stint at No. 1.

Sinner first rose to the top spot on June 10th of last year.

MEN TO SPEND 50+ WEEKS IN FIRST STINT AS NO. 1 (since 1973):

• Jimmy Connors, 160 weeks [1974-77]
• Lleyton Hewitt, 75 weeks [2001-03]
• Roger Federer, 237 weeks [2004-08]
• Novak Djokovic, 53 weeks [2011-12]
• Jannik Sinner, 50 weeks and counting [2024-25]

Sinner’s stay at No. 1 is in no immediate danger, either, as he leads No. 2-ranked Carlos Alcaraz by over 1,500 points and No. 3-ranked Alexander Zverev by over 3,000 points, and those two are defending champion and runner-up points at Roland Garros. The Italian was a semifinalist in Paris last year.

Speaking of Roland Garros, this week’s rankings determine the 32 men’s and 32 women’s seeds for the clay-court major.

Let’s take a look at the new Top 16 on both sets of rankings, which will be the all-important Top 16 seeds in Paris.

The two most noteworthy moves on the new ATP rankings are Alcaraz rising back to No. 2 after winning Rome, meaning he won’t have to face No. 1 seed Sinner until the final at Roland Garros, and Musetti rising to a new career-high of No. 8 after reaching the semifinals in the Italian capital, meaning he’ll avoid all other Top 8 seeds until at least the quarterfinals in Paris.

One more notable move: huge-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard rises from No. 36 to No. 32 after winning a Challenger in Bordeaux, clinching him the last of the 32 seeds.

The biggest news by far is Swiatek dipping from No. 2 to No. 5, meaning she’ll be the No. 5 seed at Roland Garros and could face any of the Top 4 as early as the quarterfinals. Given she’s won the title the last three years—and in four of the last five years—the Top 4 won’t want to see her in their draw, either.

And further down, American Peyton Stearns soars from No. 42 to No. 28 after her run to the semifinals in Rome, meaning she’ll be among the 32 seeds at a Grand Slam for the first time.

And last but certainly not least, Jakub Mensik—who caught the attention of the tennis world with his run to his first Masters 1000 title in Miami this year—rises from No. 21 to No. 19 this week, his Top 20 debut, after a fourth-round showing in Rome.

The 19-year-old Mensik, who was born in 2005, is the first player born in 2005 or later to reach the Top 20 on the ATP rankings.
