Jannik Sinner cruises through Shanghai opener for 60th win of year, 250th win of career

It was a double milestone kind of day for Jannik Sinner in Shanghai on Saturday, as he cruised through his opening match at the Masters 1000 event against Japan’s Taro Daniel, 6-1, 6-4.

The first milestone: it was his 60th win of the year.

Not only is Sinner the first man to record 60 wins this year, he’s actually the first tennis player, male or female, to achieve the feat—Iga Swiatek leads the women’s tour with 59 wins this year.

Additionally, having recorded 64 wins last year, Sinner is the first man with 60 or more wins in back-to-back seasons in eight years, since Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray both did it in 2015 and 2016.

The second milestone: it was the 250th win of his career.

Sinner is the first man born in the 2000s to record 250 career wins—he’s one of only three men born this century to have 200 or more.

Awaiting the No. 1-seeded Sinner in the third round in Shanghai will be No. 31-seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who defeated Botic van de Zandschulp in his opening match, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5.

Sinner won the pair’s only previous meeting in straight sets in the second round of last year’s Australian Open, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
