INTERVIEW: Jannik Sinner "waited quite long for this moment" in Rome return

The 2025 Roland Garros men’s draw is set, and like the women’s draw, much of the focus will be on the top half as top seed Jannik Sinner, BNP Paribas Open winner Jack Draper, and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic all landed in the top half.

2024 finalist Alexander Zverev also features in the top half, landing in the same quarter as Djokovic, while No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz anchors the bottom half in a quarter with Mutua Madrid Open winner Casper Ruud.

Sinner is playing his first Grand Slam tournament since serving a three-month doping ban, having tested positive for the banned substance Clostebol last spring. The world No. 1 officially returned to action at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, where the Italian Sinner reached the final. In the same quarter as Draper, who showed off his clay-court bona fides with a runner-up finish to Ruud in Madrid, Sinner will open against France’s Arthur Rinderknech, while Draper will face Italian Mattia Bellucci.

Both Sinner and Draper have potentially blockbuster second-round opponents, Sinner to possibly face the soon-to-be-retired Richard Gasquet, while Draper could play Gaël Monfils.

Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik is also in the stacked top quarter; opening against Alexandre Muller, Mensik could play hotshot Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca in the second round.

Rounding out the top quarter’s seeds are No. 9 Alex de Minaur, No. 14 Arthur Fils, and No. 17 seed Andrey Rublev.

Djokovic is looking to turn around an underwhelming clay swing after enduring opening-round losses in both Monte Carlo and Madrid. The former No. 1 will play his first round against American Mackenzie McDonald and faces a potential fourth round against fellow former No. 1 Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev gets an intriguing first round against former Indian Wells champion Cameron Norrie.

Sinner could face Djokovic in the semifinals, but both will have to get past a slew of in-form opposition in the top half of the men's draw.

No. 3 seed Zverev is also in the midst of a clay slump; despite a title run in Munich, the former No. 2 has struggled at major tournaments since reaching the Australian Open final in January, and will open against American Learner Tien. Tien made a splash in Melbourne when he won a five-set thriller over Medvedev.

Down in the bottom half, No. 2 seed Alcaraz is looking to win a second straight title on the terre battue. Fresh off a title run in Rome (on top of a victory in Monte Carlo), the Spaniard will play a throwback first round against Kei Nishikori, a former world No. 4. His quarter also features Americans Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul, who open against Lorenzo Sonego and a qualifier, respectively.

Paul won the junior Roland Garros title in 2015, and is coming off a second straight semifinal run in Rome. In the same section as Alcaraz and Ruud, his earlier seed would be No. 24 Karen Khachanov, a formidable clay foe who pushed Alcaraz to three sets in Rome.
