Jannik Sinner has powered past Learner Tien, 6-2, 6-2, to capture his third title of the year—and the 21st of his career—at the China Open.

His first two titles of the year both came at Grand Slams, the Australian Open and Wimbledon. This is the sixth ATP 500 title of his career.

And having won in Beijing in 2023 as well, Sinner becomes just the second man to win the tournament multiple times since it was upgraded to an ATP 500-level event in 2009, after Novak Djokovic, who won it six times in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Sinner asserted himself right out of the gates in Wednesday's final, breaking Tien in the very first game of the match, then grabbing another break a few games later to go up 4-1, and the two traded holds from there until he had the 34-minute first set in his pocket.

Tien put up some more resistance in the second set. Not only did he bring up his first break point of the match in Sinner's first service game of the set, but—after Sinner broke for 3-2—he had another break point in the next game that would've gotten the set back on serve.

But the Italian swatted both of those break point chances away and didn't lose another game, eventually closing it out after 72 minutes.

The two players finished the match with almost the same amount of unforced errors, Sinner 16 and Tien 18, but the Italian had more than twice as many winners on the day than the American, 24 to 11.

In the end, the Italian becomes the fourth player to win three or more ATP titles this year, and just the second player to win three or more at the ATP 500 level or higher this year, after Carlos Alcaraz.

PLAYERS WITH THREE OR MORE ATP TITLES IN 2025:

  • 8, Carlos Alcaraz: two Grand Slams (Roland Garros, US Open), three Masters 1000s (Monte Carlo, Rome, Cincinnati), three ATP 500s (Rotterdam, Queen's Club, Tokyo)
  • 4, Alexander Bublik: one ATP 500 (Halle), three ATP 250s (Gstaad, Kitzbuhel, Hangzhou)
  • 3, Luciano Darderi: three ATP 250s (Marrakech, Bastad, Umag)
  • 3, Jannik Sinner: two Grand Slams (Australian Open, Wimbledon), one ATP 500 (Beijing)

Despite the loss in the title match, it was still a week to remember for Tien—not only was it his first career ATP final, but he had never even been to the semifinals of an ATP event before this.

He also did it all at an ATP 500 event, no less.

The 19-year-old American is projected to jump from No. 52 to a new career-high of No. 36 when the new ATP rankings come out later on Wednesday, which would move him past Brazil's Joao Fonseca to become the new No. 1-ranked teenager on the ATP tour.
