Less than 24 hours ago, the world No. 1 and defending US Open singles champion was forced to retire from the Cincinnati Open final, citing illness.

“I’m super, super sorry to disappoint you guys,” Sinner told the crowd during Monday's trophy ceremony. “(Since) yesterday I didn’t feel great. I thought that I would improve during the night, but it came up worse. I tried to come out, trying to make it even in a small match, but I couldn’t handle more.”

Sinner had initially entered the revamped US Open mixed doubles tournament, which will take place for the first time during the event's Fan Week, with American Emma Navarro, but the team was later revised to feature Siniakova, the No. 2-ranked WTA doubles player.

Sinner and Siniakova were scheduled to face Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev on Louis Armstrong Stadium, and will be replaced by alternate team Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison.
