Former tennis pro turned Australian TV commentator John Alexander will become a member of Parliament after winning his seat in the country's national election on Saturday.

A Liberal party candidate, Alexander won a close content in the high-profile riding of Bennelong, where he was running against the Labour Party's Maxine McKew. In 2007, McKew defeated then-Prime Minister John Howard to take the seat.

Alexander says he will give up commentating to focus on his new political duties.
