A player needs 75 percent of the votes to be elected. The 38-year-old is a single father who still lives in Russia. After he finished his career, Kafelnikov competed as a professional poker player, did some work as a TV analyst, and also helped coach the Russian Davis Cup team.

While a player, he was known to occasionally be a surly personality, which could have affected his candidacy. However, his record is better than that of some other inductees into the Hall of Fame, including the well-liked Michael Chang, who only won one major in singles, none in doubles, never reached No. 1, nor played much Davis Cup. Kafelnikov will be Hall of Fame eligible for the next two years if the Enshrinee Nominating Committee thinks it's appropriate to put his name back on the ballot again.  —Matt Cronin
