Nick Kyrgios’ coach, Simon Rea, says he doesn’t think the 18-year-old’s elbow injury is career-threatening. The former junior world No. 1 from Australia will miss the Australian Open Playoff, which starts Monday in Melbourne, after he aggravated an elbow problem that affected him during the fall season.

Kyrgios has not been guaranteed a main-draw wild card into the 2014 Australian Open, but it’s probable he will receive one, as he is one of Australia’s top prospects.

“My understanding is Nick’s injury isn’t severe or career threatening, but it’s something that will have to be monitored,” Rea told the *Canberra Times*. “With the appropriate plan in place, we think he will overcome it.

“One way or the other, Nick will do really well. If he’s lucky enough to be handed a wildcard, then great. Otherwise I’ve got every bit of confidence the young man can win this way through qualifying the same way he did in New York at the U.S. Open.”
