Kyrgios warned for apparent lack of effort, again, at Shanghai Masters

Nick Kyrgios could get further sanctions from the ATP for another controversial exit from the Shanghai Masters, getting warned about lack of effort for the second time in three events.

But it was very different from his perhaps too-helpful intervention from umpire Mohamed Layhani at the US Open, where the veteran umpire got down and told Kyrgios, "I want to help you," eventually getting Kyrgios to say, "I'll try." The Australian eventually won in four sets.

During his opener at Shanghai, umpire Damien Dumusois warned Kyrgios about his apparent lack of effort on a return in the second set.

"That was really borderline," said the umpire.

Kyrgios took exception to the comment. "Look at the scoreboard. Maybe it’s my tactic," he said.

The 23-year-old kept bringing the issue up during the next few games and repeating "borderline" when he hit a winner. He then suggested he could complain to supervisors that he had been criticized.

"You'd be in trouble, right," said Kyrgios. "I'll literally just say I couldn't play because I felt put down."

The umpire told Kyrgios that he could do that if desired. The Australian had previously received a warning for audible obscenity.

Kyrgios fell in three sets and according to the *Times*, did not speak to press as required. "Beat Rafa at 19, can't beat [Bradley] Klahn," he was quoted by the newspaper as saying while on court, referring to his 2015 breakthrough against Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon.

In 2016, Kyrgios received an eight-week ban for lack of effort at Shanghai in the second round, also retiring in his opener in 2017.

Kyrgios, who is having ongoing hip and knee issues, is No. 38 in the rankings.
