Former ATP doubles standout Rick Leach says that world No. 1 Novak Djokovic has the ability to win his fourth straight major at Roland Garros this year.
"There is no question he can," said Leach, who is a member of the U.S. Dubler Cup (men's 45s) team that is competing this week at the ITF Seniors World Team Championships in San Diego. “I think Rafa Nadal gave pretty much everything he had in Australia and he came up a little short. That's got to give Novak a lot of confidence for the French. Coming off of last year, it was one of the most amazing years I've ever seen in tennis."
Leach added that the reason he thinks Djokovic has been able to eclipse Nadal and Roger Federer is because he’s become very fit and is calmer under pressure.
“Every time it gets to a point in the match, whether he's even or he's down, he always come up with the big shots because he so calm and relaxed,” Leach said. "I think he knows in the back of his mind that he's not going to get tired anymore. He says it's from his gluten free diet, but it's just incredible how he's just raised his game. If you would have said two years ago he would have been able to beat both of those guys consistently, you wouldn't have believed it because he was a distant three, but now he's definitely at the top."
