Li Na has won Birmingham, defeating Maria Sharapova 7-5, 6-1 to take the title.

Li won 12 of the last 15 games after going down an early break at the start of the encounter.

"Last year I beat Maria and then was so excited I forgot I had another match," said Li, who lost in the final the previous year. "If I had another match this time, I think I would probably lose that too."

Sharapova's serving performance was a sharp contrast with her semifinal against qualifier Alison Riske. A day after serving 12 aces and getting in 70% of her first serves -- one reportedly at 121 mph -- Sharapova produced seven double faults and got in only 56% of her first serves against Li.
