Feliciano Lopez cracks back at commentator Justin Gimelstob, who, at a VIP lunch previewing Friday's matches, said that the Spaniard pays too much attention to his looks and not his tennis. The wire service DPA reported that Gimelstob said that if the Spanish heartthrob spent less time looking the mirror, he would be a better tennis player.
"I think Feliciano is a great player, but he certainly loves to look in the mirror," Gimlestob reportedly said before the Spaniard's 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2), 6-4 upset of Andy Roddick in the third round of Wimbledon. "And it's okay to do it, he's a very attractive man. People always talk about women, but he is tall, handsome, with a good body. Very metrosexual, yes. But not only him, his style of tennis is also attractive."
Lopez tweeted after his match: "It's funny when people like Justin Gimelstob talks bulls* without knowing me at all. He did not learn what respect means as a kid."
Gimeltob told TENNIS.com that many of his positive comments about Lopez were not quoted, such as the Spaniard owning a dynamic game, that he admired his dedication to the Davis Cup, and what a tough match-up he is on grass because of his serve and slice backhand.
Gimelstob later apologized to Lopez on Twitter: "I'm very sorry, my comments were taken completely out of context, I have complete respect for you, on and off the court. Congrats on a great match today, you played amazing, good luck in the 4rth round."
On Friday, Gimelstob says he met up with Lopez in person and straightened everything out.
