Lorenzo Musetti charmed the Adelaide International crowd with his relatable New Year’s Resolution after the young Italian advanced into the quarterfinals in straight sets.

“The main goal for this season is to try and be a nice father because I’m becoming a father soon, in two months,” he said after dismissing local favorite Jordan Thompson, 6-4, 6-1. “Hopefully I can be a great father.”

The youngest man in the Adelaide draw, the 21-year-old Musetti revealed he was expecting his first child with girlfriend Veronica Confalonieri back in September—later sharing a maternity photoshoot on his Instagram during the off-season.

After finishing the 2023 season at No. 27 in the ATP rankings, Musetti’s winning start to his Adelaide campaign boosts his on-court goal for 2024.

“My goal right now is to try and come back to the Top 20, where I stayed all year last year. But at the end of last year, I didn’t get so many results. So, I dropped a little bit.”

Musetti peaked at No. 15 in June after reaching the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinal and the second week of Roland Garros, but lost his last six matches of the season to finish outside the Top 20.

Tentatively up to No. 25, might Musetti welcome his first child with a new career-high ranking?
