MARBELLA, Spain (AP)—Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus retired from the quarterfinals of the Andalucia Open on Friday because of a leg injury while leading 4-0 against fifth-seeded Maria Jose Martinez.
The seventh-ranked Azarenka received treatment on court to her left thigh, but was not able to play.
Martinez advanced to an all-Spanish semifinal against eighth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro, who rallied to beat Tatjana Malek of Germany 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Second-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy beat Romanian qualifier Simona Halep 6-4, 7-6 (4). She will meet Sara Errani of Italy, who came from behind to to beat Beatriz Garcia Vidagany of Spain 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3.
Errani broke for the 10th time to clinch the match in 2 hours, 26 minutes.
