The Cinderella story of the tournament in 2016, Marcus Willis returned to the spotlight with a big doubles win at Wimbledon.

The 26-year-old and doubles partner Jay Clarke defeated defending champs Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-3, in the second round with a packed crowd cheering them on Court 3.

Even Willis said the win was hard to explain.

"We played great. Crowd got behind us. I'm a bit speechless, to be honest," he said. "We took a few risks, paid off.

"If every time you win a point you can't hear yourself, it's pretty cool."

The British pairing is playing just their second tournament together, entering both as wild cards.

"I thought by now we were, but we haven't clashed racquets. It's a really good natural understanding. I don't know why. But there is, and it's great," said Willis.

Willis was a part-time teaching pro when he won seven singles matches in pre-qualifying and qualies in 2016, reaching the second round against Roger Federer. This year, he got a wild card into qualifying and fell in the final round, but has still grabbed attention in the doubles.

The 18-year-old Clarke, who reached the third round of qualifying, is playing in his first Grand Slam.

"We watch a lot of tennis and we've obviously watched these guys win so many tournaments. To actually beat them, it's unbelievable," he said.

The Bryan brothers, seeded fifth, also fell in the second round.
