Unseeded Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez has completed her stunning run in Rome by winning the title with a 7-6(5), 7-5 victory against Jelena Jankovic in the final.
"She really killed me with the dropshots," Jankovic told the crowd afterwards, having been sent tumbling on the clay on at least one occasion.
"She plays very differently to most girls, lots of drop shots, serve and volley and she's left-handed," added the Serb later. "She mixes up her game, she doesn't have one weapon. She's tricky with all these things she does."
The net-rushing Spaniard, 27, also outfoxed Ana Ivanovic and an injured Caroline Wozniacki earlier the week.
It was the third singles title of her career and by far the biggest. Her two previous wins were at small claycourt events in Bogota and Bastad.
I’m so excited I still can’t believe it... this is amazing and definitely the biggest title in the singles. It still hasn’t sunk in," said Martinez Sanchez.
Martinez Sanchez and Nuria Llagostera Vives also reached the doubles final in Rome but fell to Flavia Pennetta and Gisela Dulko 6-4, 6-2.
