The 29-year-old will now miss multiple Grand Slam events in a season for the third time in four years. Berrettini was previously sidelined for Roland Garros, having picked up a right oblique injury at his home event in Rome—a setback that followed a mid-match retirement at the Mutua Madrid Open.
Berrettini is 13-11 on the season, with wins over Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic. He last competed at Wimbledon, where he fell over five sets in the opening round to Kamil Majchrzak.
Brandon Holt, who was announced as one of the US Open main-draw wild cards Wednesday, now earns direct entry into the 128-player field following Berrettini’s withdrawal. Earlier this week, Grigor Dimitrov also dropped out as a result of the pectoral injury he suffered at Wimbledon when he led eventual champion Jannik Sinner by two sets.
