The Citi Open in Washington, D.C., has a preliminary field that includes almost half the Top 20 and 18 of the Top 30, with Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and David Goffin entered as the highest-ranked players.

That is stronger than usual for the ATP 500-level tournament, which saw nine Top-30 competitors in its draw a year ago. The hard-court event is scheduled to be the first ATP tournament since professional tour competition was suspended by the coronavirus pandemic.

Those who have entered are also likely to be aiming to play the US Open, which follows two weeks later. Cincinnati's Western & Southern Open, relocated to Flushing Meadows, will be contested in between.

Still, there could be changes as players assess whether they want to travel or compete during the U.S. swing. A week ago, Goffin said he was still "not sure" whether he would make the trip.

Significant clay events at Madrid, Rome and the French Open are all scheduled to begin in September, a crammed lineup forcing players to weigh their options. Tournaments are also monitoring local and national government restrictions leading into their events, which could force changes or cancellations.

The rankings used for entry in Washington, D.C. stem from the last published set on March 16, when the ATP put a freeze in place. Reigning champion Nick Kyrgios was not on the current list, but can retain his 500 points as part of the tour's revised ranking system.
