BANGKOK(AP) Jurgen Melzer of Austria defeated Turkish qualifier Marsel Ilhan 6-4, 6-2 Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open.
The 44th-ranked Melzer broke his opponent once in each set, using his superior baseline game to overcome the 174th-ranked Ilhan.
Melzer will play the winner between Donald Young of the United States and Andreas Beck of Germany.
In first-round matches, Kevin Kim of the U.S. beat Rainer Schuettler of Germany 6-4, 6-4, and Mischa Zverev of Germany rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Leonardo Mayer of Argentina.
Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan, who returned to the ATP tour after a wrist injury, teamed with Danai Udomchoke in a loss to Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Peya 6-2, 1-6, 10-6.
