AUCKLAND, New Zealand(AP) Sixth-seeded Jurgen Melzer beat Fabio Fognini of Italy 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the second round of the Heineken Open.

The Austrian, who had a personal best 36-29 singles record last year, was the only seeded player in action Monday. He will play Germany's Florian Mayer or French wild card Sebastian Grosjean in Wednesday's second round.

The tournament's top four seeds - Spaniards Tommy Robredo, David Ferrer, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Nicolas Almagro - all received byes into the second round.

Unseeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, ranked No. 34, beat Switzerland's Marco Chiudinelli 6-3, 6-3 in only 64 minutes.
