T...aste of Tennis was held on Thursday, with Rafael Nadal participating as one of the guest chefs. It's unknown if he served his dishes on clay plates.
E...x-doubles partners Eric Butorac and Jamie Murray - fresh with new teammates - both lost in the semifinals of New Haven. The losses prevented what would have been an interesting collision between these two in the final.
N...ew Haven women's champion Svetlana Kuznetsova won only one full match en route to her first title of 2007. After receiving a bye in the first round, each of her quarterfinal, semifinal, and final opponents retired (left ankle, nausea, and lower back, for those of you keeping score). Her only completed match was in the second round, when she defeated Agnieszka Radawanska 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
N...otable withdrawal from the U.S. Open of the week: Gael Monfils, who injured his hamstring while playing in New Haven this past week.
I...n a podcast interview with the BlackRock Tennis Champions Tour, Bjorn Borg stated that he thinks Roger Federer "will go on to be the greatest player of all time, finishing with 15 of 16 Grand Slam titles."
S...yracuse University student (and ESPN Radio host) Graham Bensinger conducted a lengthy two-part interview with Pete Sampras. The videos, which I highly recommend viewing, are currently available on ESPN.com's tennis page.
W...illiams sisters Venus and Serena will both play matches in the opening night session of the U.S. Open, which follows a tribute to African-American tennis legend Althea Gibson.
O...n demand coverage of the U.S. Open will be available through DIRECTV. Much like the coordination of the satellite provider and the Tennis Channel earlier this year at Roland Garros, USA Network and DIRECTV will offer subscribers the option of watching matches on other televised courts.
R...oger Federer practice partner Jesse Levine has decided to turn pro at this year's U.S. Open. He'll be welcomed onto the tour by facing the #4 seed, Nikolay Davydenko, in the opening round.
L...indsay Davenport's first match since giving birth to her first child was a loss, albeit a close one, at the hands of eventual New Haven finalists Cara Black and Liezel Huber (6-7, 6-3, 10-4). Davenport partnered with fellow American Lisa Raymond.
D...avis Cup will be the last competitive tennis from Tim Henman, who announced on Thursday in New York that he will retire after Great Britain's tie with Croatia in September.
