T...eammates last week on the Russian Fed Cup team, Anna Chakvetadze and Elena Vesnina were opponents this week in the Cincinnati Open quarterfinals.  Chakvetadze emerged victorious after Vesnina retired late in the third set.
E...ngland's most prestigious tennis tournament, Wimbledon, will now be broadcast in the United States by the Tennis Channel after agreeing to a six-year deal with the All England Club.  The niche network, which will share coverage with NBC and ESPN, now has its hand in televising three of the four Grand Slams.
N...ew Haven's draw is often weaker than other events because the tournament is held only days before the U.S. Open starts, but the return of Lindsey Davenport will be a welcome addition for the Connecticut fans who attend.
N...o strangers to each other, Lleyton Hewitt has hired the services of fellow Aussie Tony Roche to be his coach.  The two previously worked together in Davis Cup years ago when Hewitt was a teenager.
I...ndefatigable Akiko Morigami, Sania Mirza, and Karin Knapp all reached the semifinals in both the singles and doubles draws of their respective tournaments (Morigami and Mirza in Cincinnati, Knapp in Palermo).
S...wiss George Bastl, best known for being one of the only players to have ever defeated Pete Sampras at Wimbledon, played in only his second ATP Tour tournament of the year in Los Angeles.  He defeated Ilia Bozoljac in the first round before falling to Marat Safin in three sets.
W...in total in 2007 of Amersfoort finalists Werner Eschauer and Steve Darcis coming into this week?  Three, all by Eschauer (ATP Tour wins only).
O...ne-time UCLA Bruin Zack Fleishman upset top seeded Fernando Gonzalez in the first round of the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles.  There isn't really a "home court advantage" in professional tennis, per se, but this match may have been an exception to the rule.
R...eturning to his preferred clay before the upcoming hard court stretch, Rafael Nadal didn't drop a set en route to victory in Stuttgart.  Rafa also continued his dominance of Swiss players on clay, although this time Stanislas Wawrinka was the victim, instead of Roger Federer.
L...osing all of their matches for the remainder of the year still wouldn't prevent Federer, Nadal, or the Bryan brothers from participating in the Tennis Masters Cup; they all clinched berths based on their impressive point totals so far.
D...efaulted this week: Anastasia Rodionova, who hit a ball towards fans in Cincinnati that were cheering for her opponent, Angelique Kerber. It's only the second time this has occurred in WTA Tour history.

McGrogan's Heroes

ATP - Of the three tournaments this past week, most would agree that the strongest field was in Stuttgart, where three French Open champions (Nadal, Juan Carlos Ferrero, and Gaston Gaudio) and a host of other established players convened for the Mercedes Cup.  On the contrary, the weakest draw was probably here in the U.S., where Amer Delic (as an eight seed!) and a host of fringe players made up the majority of the Countrywide Classic participants.  In terms of field strength, the Dutch Open was somewhere in the middle, but no matter how strong you rate the draw in Amersfoort, it would be an injustice not to rate Steve Darcis' victory as the top men's performance of the week.

Darcis

Darcis

Coming into this past week, Darcis, a native of Belgium, had a whopping zero ATP Tour level victories to his credit.  Since he started playing professionally in September of 2002, Darcis' only match experience besides Futures and Challengers included a first round loss to Tomas Zib last year (also at Amersfoort), and a loss in the 2005 Davis Cup at the hands of James Blake.  Because of this history, Darcis needed to get through qualifying just to reach this year's main draw.  He did so, and then proceeded to win five more matches (for a grand total of eight) to claim the Dutch Open title.  To notch your first victory on tour and win your first championship in the same week is a pretty rare achievement - and for that, Darcis is this week's hero.

WTA - No one would ever confuse Hungary with a world tennis power, especially in recent years.  Since 1992, the country has competed in the final World Group of the Fed Cup only once, and in the Davis Cup, Hungary rarely competes in the World Group.  Looking at individual players, there are only six Hungarians in the top 700 of the WTA Tour; the ATP Tour is even more deprived, with just one in the top 700 (Kornel Bardoczky, ranked #471).

All of this information makes Agnes Szavay's victory in Palmero all the more impressive (that's a picture of her, up top).  Ranked #53 in the world coming into this past week, Szavay may be the shining light that Hungarian tennis has needed for some time.  Her matches this week included upsets of third seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals, as well as second seed Martina Muller in Sunday's final.  Amazingly, both of these victories were routs, with Szavay winning 6-0, 6-3 against Radwanska, and demolishing Muller 6-0, 6-1.  At only eighteen years of age, this could only be the beginning for Szavay, which would be music to the ears of Hungarian Fed Cup captain Gabor Juhasz.

Beyond the Bracket

Austria is one of the focal points of the tennis world this week as both the ATP and WTA stage tournaments in the Central European nation.  Kitzbühel, a resort city in the winter, hosts the men, while the women play farther east towards Salzburg in the village of Bad Gastien.

The Austrian Open (ATP) is an International Series Gold event which has a 48 player draw.  Formerly known as the Generali Open, this clay event has has been historically dominated by Argentines and Spaniards, who have combined to win 19 of the 36 Kitzbühel tournaments.  Repeat winners from these two countries include Guillermo Vilas, who won here four times, Albert Costa, who was victorious on three occasions, and Alex Corretja, who held the winner's trophy twice.  Kitzbühel is also one of the few dirt tournaments that Pete Sampras won; he defeated Alberto Mancini here way back in 1992.

Compared to the history and prestige of Kitzbühel, the Bad Gastein Ladies tournament has some catching up to do - but that's because this is a new event on the calendar.  The inaugural tournament is a Tier III on the WTA Tour hierarchy, and as such will carry a relatively small prize purse of $175,000 (Kitzbühel's purse is $925,000; Stanford, the other women's event this week, has a purse of $600,000).  In spite of this, many notable WTA performers, including Franceca Schiavone, Emilie Loit, and Roberta Vinci will help mark the debut of the Gastein Ladies.  The event is also internet-friendly; check out this webcam of Center Court, courtesy of the tournament's official website.
