Gael Monfils pulls out of the SAP Open in San Jose with a left wrist injury. The second-seeded Frenchman irritated his wrist in his three-set victory over Robert Kendrick on Thursday night, but still managed to edge Tim Smyczek 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the Friday afternoon quarterfinal. But the injury flared up again on Friday night and he consequently pulled out of Saturday's semifinal against Milos Raonic. He will miss tournaments in Memphis, Acapulco, the Davis Cup and possibly Indian Wells.
"Since the Australian Open I've had this pain," he said. "We decided to stop for between four and six weeks. It's been a month and a half that I've had this pain. I can’t hit my backhand. I tried, but my backhand is very soft. I have a better backhand than I showed here—more powerful."—Matthew Cronin
