ROTTERDAM, Netherlands(AP) Andy Murray reached the ABN Amro semifinals Friday after Marc Gicquel retired because of a thigh injury with the Scot leading 7-6 (2), 4-6, 3-0.
Murray will meet Mario Ancic, who defeated Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-2.
Gicquel, a late replacement for the injured Robin Soderling, matched Murray shot for shot early in the match. But he called for the trainer and had his left thigh bandaged midway through the second set.
It's never good to end a match like this,'' Murray said.It was a good match with lots of chances. I was very pleased with my service.''
Ancic, the runner-up last week in Zagreb, Croatia, reached the ABN Amro final in 2005.
I wish I could play in the Netherlands every week,'' he said.My results here are great.''
Later Friday, top-ranked Rafael Nadal will meet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Gael Monfils will play Julien Benneteau in an all-French quarterfinal.
