Andy Murray said that he has improved on clay over the years. Despite never winning a title on clay, he did reach the semifinals at Roland Garros last year. The Scot is playing in Munich this week in his first event since getting married to Kim Sears on April 11.
In 2014, he lost early in Madrid against Santiago Giraldo, and then lost in three sets to Rafael Nadal in Rome. Nadal also beat Murray in the semifinals of the French Open.
“I think one of the challenges is to try not to let the clay] affect the way that you play,” Murray [told *The Independent*. “Obviously, moving on clay is a challenge for a lot of the players. It’s something I work on a lot during the clay-court season because of the sliding and the different movements that you have to make. In terms of my game style, I try to stay as close as I can to what it is on the other surfaces.”
The world No. 3 is the top seed in Munich, and there are no other members of the Top 10 in the draw.
“I thought this would be a good opportunity to try to play some matches on the clay,” Murray said. “I’d like to try to win a clay-court event. A lot of the times when I have played well on the clay I’ve lost to Rafa and to Novak [Djokovic], so I’m hoping I can have a good run here.”
