YESTERDAY (July 19)
Springfield Lasers d. PHILADELPHIA FREEDOMS 20-19
Springfield looks to slowly be finding a rhythm during Mylan World TeamTennis’ 40th season, earning its second win in a come-from-behind victory over the Philadelphia Freedoms on the road. Playing at home, Philly nabbed three of the first four sets to lead 18-15 in time for the final set. Michael Russell had once been an anchor for the Lasers—leading the league in men’s singles in 2014—but had struggled to reclaim that form for much of the season thus far. Playing Robby Ginepri in a one-set shootout, Russell found a vein of spectacular play to shut out his countryman 5-1 to take the match, 20-19. The Freedoms next host the Kastles in the final of three regular season encounters; can they earn their first win over Washington?
AUSTIN ACES d. California Dream 20-18
The trilogy between the Dream and the Aces came to its exciting conclusion on Sunday. Back in the Gregory Gymnasium, the Dream had its chances to upset the undefeated Austin Aces—leading 14-10 at halftime after Anabel Medina Garrigues and Neal Skupski finally upset the formidable Alla Kudryavtseva and Teymuraz Gabashvili in mixed doubles. Emerging from the break eager to maintain their streak, Kudryavtseva paired with Nicole Gibbs to claim the women’s doubles 5-2, leaving it all up to Gabashvili to clinch a sixth straight win. Needing to beat Tennys Sandgren 5-2 or better to avoid a Super Tiebreaker or Extended Play, the big-hitting Russian raced out to a 3-0 lead and never let up to complete Austin’s mastery of the California Dream. Austin next travels to San Diego to play the Western Conference’s No. 2; can they make it seven straight wins?

TOMORROW (July 21)
Live Stream of the Day: Boston Lobsters @ Washington Kastles 7PM EDT
The Top 2 teams in the East face off at the Smith Center on Tuesday night. Can the Lobsters put another hitch in Washington’s wagon despite losing to the four-time defending champions to start the 2015 season? Denis Kudla suffered a quick loss to Alex Kuznetsov in Boston’s only set win that night. How will the rising American fare against Tim Smyczek?
Springfield Lasers @ California Dream 10:30PM EDT
The Lasers have shown signs of life in the last few days, and are slowly coming in for third place behind the California Dream. The Dream beat the Lasers 23-18, but were forced into Extended Play when Andre Begemann and Michael Russell took the men’s doubles against Neal Skupski and Tennys Sandgren. Look for that match-up to spark more fireworks at the Sunrise Mall.
