YESTERDAY (July 22)
Austin Aces def. SPRINGFIELD LASERS 23-16
The Aces increase their incredible winning streak to 8-0 after a rain-interrupted win over the Springfield Lasers. Men’s singles league leader Teymuraz Gabashvili took the first two sets before Michael Russell and Andre Begemann hit back at the Russian and Jarmere Jenkins in men’s doubles. After halftime, Gabashvili’s compatriot Alla Kudryavtseva paired with Nicole Gibbs for a successful set of women’s doubles before Gibbs finished the job against Lasers newcomer, Alison Riske. The Aces next head to Philadelphia to take on the Freedoms, while the Lasers have a day of rest before hosting Philly at Mediacom Stadium at Cooper Tennis Complex.
Philadelphia Freedoms def. BOSTON LOBSTERS 24-14
Looking out of contention a few days ago, the Philadelphia Freedoms have shown signs of life after taking out each of the Top 2 Eastern Conference teams to start the second week. Taylor Townsend took the early initiative in mixed doubles to hold a set point on her serve, but Scott Lipsky and Arantxa Parra Santonja hit back to claim the set in a tiebreak. The young American was undaunted, however, and turned the match on its head when she ousted Mylan WTT top Draft Pick Irina Falconi, 5-0. The tide was all but turned in men’s singles when Robby Ginepri beat rising American Tim Smyczek in another tiebreak to take a commanding lead at halftime. Hoping to force extended play in the final set, Smyczek and Lipsky fell behind an early break in men’s doubles to Ginepri and Marcelo Melo, who finished the match with a big serve. Boston remain at the Manchester Athletic Club with another opportunity to face the Washington Kastles.
California Dream def. SAN DIEGO AVIATORS 25-11
In second place for most of the season, the San Diego Aviators saw their Western Conference lead evaporate as the California Dream usurped them after a 25-11 victory at the Omni La Costa Resort. The Dream won all five sets, with doubles specialists Neal Skupski and Anabel Medina Garrigues delivering the finishing blow on Darija Jurak and Raven Klaasen. The Aviators have a chance to revenge when they head to the Sunrise Mall for a rematch against the Dream tomorrow.
TODAY (July 23)
Live Stream of the Day: San Diego Aviators @ California Dream 10:30 EDT
The Aviators and Dream face off for a third encounter of Mylan WTT’s 40th season; with one win apiece, the Aviators have a chance to push back for second place against the ascending Dream. How will Dream coach David Macpherson order the events in this all-Western Conference match-up? Can Junior No. 1 Taylor Fritz hit back at Tennys Sandgren, who edged the youngster in a men’s singles tiebreak?
Austin Aces @ Philadelphia Freedoms 7PM EDT
Can the Austin Aces keep up their unbeaten streak against the fast-rising Philadelphia Freedoms? Taylor Townsend was crucial to the Freedoms’ win over the Boston Lobsters, how will she match up against Austin’s Nicole Gibbs? The Freedoms beat four-time defending champions in the Washington Kastles the last time they played at home; will the Villanova University Pavilion crowd be able to help unseat the Aces?
Washington Kastles @ Boston Lobsters 7PM EDT
The Boston Lobsters have yet to beat the Kastles in 2015, and have another chance at home to take out the five time King Trophy winners. But it will be a tough ask with Wimbledon women’s doubles champion Martina Hingis joining the Kastles for the first of her three regular season matches. Playing alongside Hingis will be Leander Paes; the two also captured the mixed doubles title at the All England Club in emphatic fashion. Will Parra Santonja and Lipsky be able to win a second straight set of mixed doubles against the Wimbledon winners?
TOMORROW (July 24)
Philadelphia Freedoms @ Springfield Lasers 8PM EDT
If the Freedoms want to reach the Eastern Conference Championships, they will have to put in a strong performance against the two-time Mylan WTT finalists. The Lasers have been steadily improving in 2015, but recently suffered a tough loss to the Austin Aces. How will Alison Riske match up against Taylor Townsend in women’s singles, and how will Marcelo Melo contend with big-hitting German, Andre Begemann?
Washington Kastles @ Austin Aces 8PM EDT
It was the match-up that turned the 2015 season on its head. Playing their second match of the season, the Kastles were stunned by the Aces, who haven’t lost a match since. With Martina Hingis not coming back until Sunday, the Kastles will have a similar line-up to contend against the Aces at the Gregory Gymnasium. Can dynamic Russians Teymuraz Gabashvili and Alla Kudryavtseva lead the Aces to another win over Washington?
