YESTERDAY (July 23)

Live Stream of the Day: CALIFORNIA DREAM def. San Diego Aviators 20-19

The California Dream earned their second win in three encounters with their fellow Western Conference team, cementing their second place position with some solid tennis -- and a little help from top doubles team, Bob and Mike Bryan. Though the Aviators took the early initiative in men’s and women’s singles, Mike Bryan teamed up with fellow doubles specialist Anabel Medina Garrigues to beat Raven Klaasen and Daria Jurak. After halftime, Jurak got her revenge against Medina Garrigues in women’s doubles, but Klaasen wasn’t able to do the same against the Bryans in the final set. With a 5-1 final set, the Dream improved to 6-4, while the Aviators languish behind at 3-6.

PHILADELPHIA FREEDOMS def. Austin Aces 22-14 (EP)

An improbable winning streak came to an equally improbable conclusion on Thursday night. Heading into Philadelphia with an 8-0 season record, the Austin Aces were high on confidence. But like the West’s top team, the Freedoms were also feeling good about their chances to pull off big upsets, having recently topped the Washington Kastles at home. After four sets of uninterrupted domination, the Aces were looking poised for a crushing defeat until Alla Kudryavtseva and Jarmere Jenkins roared back to win mixed doubles 5-1. Pushing the match into Extended play left the fast-improving Taylor Townsend undaunted, however, as the young American and Marcelo Melo won the requisite game to end the encounter and match the Boston Lobsters in second place in the East.

Washington Kastles def. BOSTON LOBSTERS 25-14

Martina Hingis made a triumphant return to Mylan World TeamTennis, winning all three of her sets -- including a tensely-fought set of women’s singles against Irina Falconi -- to lead the four-time defending champions to a decisive win at the Manchester Athletic Club. Hingis and Leander Paes, the reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon mixed doubles champions, set the tone from the start, taking a 5-2 opening set before the Swiss Miss paired with Anastasia Rodionova to win women’s doubles by the same score. The Lobsters showed signs of life in men’s doubles when they took a 4-1 lead on Paes and Sam Querrey, but the Kastles roared back behind some impressive shotmaking to take the set in a tiebreak. Querrey dealt the finishing blow in men’s singles, keeping the Kastles in a firm first place ahead of Philadelphia and Boston.

It was the match-up that turned the 2015 season on its head. Playing their second match of the season, the Kastles were stunned by the Aces, who have lost just one match since.
